The Federal Pro Se Project and Paul Weiss Collaborate on Discovery Workshop to Assist Pro Se Litigants

by Cheryl Lopez February 7, 2020

The City Bar Justice Center’s Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Project (FEDPRO) recently hosted its second Discovery Workshop in collaboration with pro bono partner Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton, & Garrison LLP (Paul Weiss). The event kicked off with a presentation led by volunteer attorney Nicolas Kabat, who provided participants with an overview of the discovery process – beginning with the basics of the discovery stage of litigation and ending with an in-depth overview of rules that govern the process. “This workshop is a wonderful opportunity for self-represented litigants to dive deep into a complicated stage of litigation,” said FEDPRO Director Cat Itaya. “We received all-around positive feedback from clients who really appreciated the chance to meet with Paul Weiss attorneys.” The presentation was followed by a legal clinic where participants had the opportunity to meet with an attorney and obtain legal advice and counsel on their specific civil case. One litigant said she felt “lucky” that the workshop occurred just as her case entered discovery. “There should be workshops like this for every stage of litigation,” another grateful participant commented.

FEDPRO’s Discovery Workshop is part of its broader efforts to support pro se litigants who cannot afford to hire an attorney to represent them in court. In 2019, about 20% of the Project’s clients sought legal assistance during the discovery stage of litigation. The Project strives to help clients navigate the complexities of the litigation process by providing them with a solid understanding of federal rules and procedures that govern the discovery stage. With the valuable support of partners like Paul Weiss and other firms that provide invaluable pro bono assistance, FEDPRO’s guidance makes a critical difference for pro se litigants – it equips clients with essential tools and resources to strengthen their ability to represent themselves in court, improving their chances for better outcomes.
