PRO BONO HONOREES
The City Bar Justice Center salutes the following individuals who were honored at our annual Epstein Awards event in October 2019. The awards ceremony is named for Jeremy G. Epstein (1946-2009), a Shearman & Sterling LLP partner and board member at the City Bar Justice Center, The Legal Aid Society, and the Fund for Modern Courts. Mr. Epstein logged over 5,000 hours of pro bono and public service over 20 years.
Lifetime Achievement: Henri Gueron,
The City Bar Justice Center’s 2018 Epstein Awards featured the first-ever Epstein Award for Lifetime Achievement, honoring Dr. Henri Gueron as an individual who exemplifies our best pro bono traditions and the highest standards of our legal profession.
Dr. Gueron has volunteered with CBJC’s Immigrant Justice Project for almost twenty years. Not content simply to just sit back after a career as a nuclear engineer and then senior Con Edison attorney, Dr. Gueron has represented CBJC clients at the asylum office, in Immigration Court, and before both the Board of Immigration Appeals and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. With clients hailing from countries as varied as the Democratic Republic of Congo to Kyrgyzstan, Colombia to Tibet, Dr. Gueron has won asylum for almost 25 individuals – a number that would be the envy of many New York City law firms. Each client has benefited from his passion, brilliance, and unparalleled commitment.
Dr. Gueron also continues to transform clients’ lives after they secure asylum – helping them apply for green cards and petitioning for family members. In one instance, Dr. Gueron reached out to contacts at a major U.S. energy company that went on to hire a Cameroonian man for whom Dr. Gueron won asylum. As he enjoys a successful career at the company, that gentleman is now also pursuing advanced degrees in electrical engineering and business. Dr. Gueron’s work has also reunited families who have been separated for years – a feat all the more praiseworthy in light of the family separation crisis that has gripped our nation in the past year.
