Overview

The Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Project of the City Bar Justice Center provides free, unbundled legal services to pro se litigants who cannot afford to hire an attorney. Examples of our services include:

  • Brief legal counseling
  • Advising litigants about potential federal claims prior to filing suit
  • Interpreting and explaining federal rules and procedures
  • Reviewing draft pleadings and correspondence with the court

The Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Project operates on-site at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York’s Brooklyn courthouse. We assist pro se plaintiffs and defendants on a variety of federal legal issues, including civil rights, employment discrimination, and disability discrimination. The Project provides assistance through a director, coordinator, pro bono attorneys, and law school/college interns.

We assist individuals with claims arising in Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and Staten Island. We are unable to assist incarcerated litigants at this time.

Individuals with claims arising in the Bronx, Manhattan, or Westchester should seek assistance from the Pro Se Legal Assistance Project in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

The Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Project is directed by Jean Soo Park and Jeffrey Núñez is the project coordinator.
