CBJC Presents on Human Trafficking Panel
by CBJC Staff November 29, 2016
New York Assemblywoman Annette M. Robinson organized a panel on Monday, November 14 for community leaders in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn. Staff Attorney Laura Berger was one of the panelists, and she shared statistics about child sex trafficking and human trafficking in general in New York City and information about resources available to help survivors of trafficking at the City Bar Justice Center. The other panelists came from the Brooklyn DA’s Office, other non-profits in New York City that serve trafficking survivors, and the New York City Commission on Human Rights.
Over fifty people attended the panel, and the questions showed the depth of knowledge in the room. One question was from a woman who works at an Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) group home, and asked how to handle the issue of having one victim of sex trafficking who recruits other minors into trafficking. Another question touched on how to prevent trafficking and what information would be appropriate to share with children. Many of the students, community-based organizations and other leaders in the audience gained new information to bring back to their community with the goal of preventing and detecting human trafficking.
