CBJC Partners with Goldman Sachs for LGBT Homeowner Stability Clinic

LGBT senior and disabled communities face a particular set of challenges to maintaining financial and legal stability. This can include: isolation based on identity, estrangement from family, targeting by scammers, historical discrimination leading to life-long reduction in income, and residual stigma associated with being out or living with HIV and AIDS. Together with Goldman Sachs, the City Bar Justice Center’s Homeowner Stability and LGBT Advocacy Projects are hosting a clinic designed for these communities.

Although the Homeowner Stability Project focuses primarily on foreclosure prevention, our ultimate goal is to keep vulnerable homeowners in place, whatever the threat may be. This half-day clinic is intended to provide useful information to LGBT homeowners who are seniors or live with a disability. Attendees will receive financial and legal planning advice regardless of whether they have existing legal issues.

The director of the two projects, the vice-chair of the CBJC Planning and Estates Law Project, and a financial adviser from Goldman Sachs will be presenting a panel on budgeting, financial and life planning, estate issues, foreclosure prevention, and other useful information for those who own a home, condo or co-op in New York City. The panel is open to anyone who has an interest in the subject matter, whether for themselves or for their clients.

Attendees will have an opportunity to meet with a pro bono attorney for a legal and financial assessment. Attorneys will answer legal questions and prepare basic documents such as healthcare proxies and powers of attorney, plans for the future, and address any home ownership stability issues. This clinic is meant to catch issues before they arise, discover existing issues, and help vulnerable members of the LGBTQ community create a plan to stay in place as they age.
